The teaching of tunes is the unravelling of how
one hears a tune. Paul prefers to teach without the use of written
notes, though sheet music may occasionally be used as a supplement.
When listening to Irish Music one hears phrases
which often have little or no connection with the written line,
yet each represents a logical unit in itself.
Paul teaches tunes by identifying and breaking
down these units further, then gradually he rebuilds them along
with the students. In this way the natural flow of the music
is appreciated more than if learned purely from the written
form.
